Chapter Fifteen

TWO DAYS HAD passed since Cindy vanished into the black sedan, her chocolate-coated-strawberry scent disappearing with her. After we said our goodbyes, the realization of never seeing her again had hit me hard. She wouldn’t remember any of it, but I would and I got to carry that knowledge with me forever. Sadness hung over me like a rain cloud.

Had I led her on? Was there a part of me that enjoyed the attention I received from her? Or, did a part of me long for the type of relationship my parents had. Only now had I been forced to consider such things. I had to take a long hard look at myself in the mirror to figure this out.

I moped in my office at the Foundation, reviewing the same report for the fourth time and still not reading it. That was my morning. I suppose if I were paying attention I would have noticed sooner, but as it was, a familiar tickle tugged the back of my brain and my gaze shot up before the knock came. I sensed Juliet as she approached.

The last we talked, she’d explained my ability to recognize immortals would grow, and once I completely transitioned, I would be able to sense other immortals with ease. However, it would never be perfect and there were ways for my senses to be tricked. I would have to learn.

“May I come in?”

“Of course.” I stood.

She closed the office door, and we met at the small conference table.

“Is everything all right?”

“I was going to ask you the same thing,” Juliet took off her mole-hair jacket and placed it over the chair next to her. “You’ve been quiet and distant.”

I poured us both a glass of water. The non-flavor of it had little appeal for me, but I was used to it. I was losing my sense of taste the more I transitioned, so I would need to get used to it.

“I’m all right. My appetite is coming back, as are the flavors, so that’s good, but things are still pretty bland.”

“It’ll be back to normal in the next day or two.” Juliet smiled. “After your next Mark, it’ll take longer, and then after your last Mark, there’ll be no flavor. I suggest you enjoy it now.” She played with her glass of water. “I wish I knew what a milkshake tasted like. They look so good.”

“They are,” I said. “There was this place up in Reno where Cindy and I would go sometimes. It was great.” I beamed at the memory.

“I’m sure.” Juliet took a sip and put the glass aside. She focused on me, a thoughtful expression crossing her face. “That is partly why I wanted to talk to you.”

“Why? Is something wrong? Nothing happened to her, did it?” I found myself standing, surprised at how quickly I moved.

“Chris, relax.” Juliet pointed to my seat. “She’s fine. Everything went well. Gregor is having Terrie stay up there for a few more days, just to make sure. However, that is why I’m here.
